• Asian shares extended gains on Tuesday and the dollar notched a four-month high against the yen, as investors awaited testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen for clues on when the central bank would tighten U.S. monetary policy.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.8 percent, with technology-led gains on Wall Street sparking sentiment toward Asian tech shares.

• Japanese stocks finished at a near two-week high on Tuesday, as a weaker yen boosted many export-oriented stocks, while tech shares were cheered by the strong Nasdaq performance overnight.

The Nikkei rose 0.6 percent to 20,195.48, the highest closing level since June 29.

• China stocks diverged on Tuesday, with the blue-chip index hitting a fresh 18-month high as investors chased companies with solid fundamentals, while small-caps extended a fall on expectations more equity issuance would soften valuations.

The blue-chip CSI300 index rose 0.5 percent to 3,670.81 points, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost0.3 percent to 3,203.04 points.

• Hong Kong stocks extended this week's rally, posting their best day in four months on Tuesday, bolstered by strong gains among financial sector stocks.

The Hang Seng Index rose 1.5 percent, to 25,877.64
