 • Asian stocks recovered from early losses to close mostly higher on Wednesday as the yen stabilized, Apple's quarterly earnings came in better than expected and Chinese manufacturing as well services sector data suggested that China's recent recovery remains largely intact at the start of the New Year.

• Japan's Nikkei share average rose on Wednesday as the yen's appreciation slowed, but gains were limited as investors continued to worry about some policies of President Donald Trump's administration.

The Nikkei, which was down in early trade, ended 0.6 percent higher to 19,148.08.

• Hong Kong stocks fell on Wednesday as traders returned from a long holiday and caught up to losses in overseas markets amid growing worries over the policies of new U.S. President Donald Trump.

The benchmark Hang Seng index slid 0.71 percent by lunch break to 23,195.23 points in the first day of trading since Friday. The China Enterprises Index fell 0.99 percent, to 9,707.15 points.
