Japanese stocks rose nearly 2 percent on Wednesday after the Bank of Japan overhauled its monetary policy, potentially easing pressure on banks and insurers.

The benchmark Nikkei average ended up 1.9 percent, its biggest one-day percentage rise since Aug. 29, at 16,807.62 points.

China stocks rose slightly on Wednesday, aided by strength in property and financial stocks, although the general mood remained cautious.

The blue-chip CSI300 index rose 0.3 percent, to 3,266.64, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.1 percent to 3,025.87 points.

Hong Kong stocks rose on Wednesday as Asian markets were cheered by the Bank of Japan's decision to overhaul its policy framework, with investors' focus now shifting to the U.S. Federal Reserve's meeting later in the global day.

The Hang Seng index rose 0.6 percent to 23,669.90 points, while the China Enterprises Index gained 1.0 percent to 9,849.06.
