The Dow ended above 18,000 for the first time since April on Wednesday as declines in the dollar lifted some commodity-related shares and boosted the outlook for multinationals.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose 66.77 points, or 0.37 percent, to 18,005.05, closing above 18,000 for the first time since April 27.

Asian stocks edged up on Thursday after Wall Street gained overnight, while a weaker dollar buoyed commodities such as gold and crude oil.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS rose 0.3 percent.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 snapped two consecutive sessions of gains, falling 0.7 percent, as dollar weakness pushed up the yen and put stocks under pressure. The yen traded at 106.84 against the dollar as of 8:32 a.m. HK/SIN, dropping from levels near 107.80 earlier in the week.

Markets in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are closed Thursday for the Dragon Boat Festival.
