• The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI fell 251.94 points, or 1.02 percent, to 24,415.84, the S&P 500 .SPX lost 18.74 points, or 0.69 percent, to 2,705.27 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 20.34 points, or 0.27 percent, to 7,442.12.

For the month, the S&P rose 2.16 percent, the Dow added 1.05 percent, and the Nasdaq gained 5.32 percent.

U.S. stocks fell on Thursday after the United States moved to impose tariffs on metal imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, prompting retaliatory measures from some of its trading partners.

• Investor concerns over U.S. trade policy overshadowed worries about political instability in Italy, driving equity prices lower on Thursday.

• Asian markets slipped on Friday as trade tensions returned to the spotlight after the U.S. announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on several of its allies would be reapplied.

• The Nikkei 225 tracked lower by 0.24 percent and the broader Topix shed 0.29 percent. Over in South Korea, the Kospi hovered around the flat line, last trading lower by 0.05 percent.

• Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.5 percent, with losses led by its energy subindex in the morning.
