• The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI rose 0.54 percent to end at 26,392.79, its highest close ever. The S&P 500 .SPX ended 0.06 percent higher at 2,839.25, also its highest ever close. Earlier, it gained as much as 0.39 percent.

The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC declined 0.05 percent to 7,411.16.

• Asian stocks edged back from record highs on Friday but were still poised to end the week with strong gains, while the battered dollar won back some ground after President Donald Trump said he wanted a strong U.S. currency.

• MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index was still poised to rise about 1.4 percent on the week and headed for its seventh straight week of gains.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS was 0.3 percent lower at 607.77 after reaching a record high above 610 on Wednesday, weighed down after Wall Street shares stalled overnight.

• Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.3 percent in the early going. Major exporters got some relief as the dollar held onto gains made overnight. Automakers were higher for the most part, with Toyota rising 0.74 percent and Honda tacking on 0.53 percent. Fanuc Manufacturing was higher by 0.98 percent.
