Asia shares inched up on Tuesday while oil fell for a second session as investors awaited clues on whether the Federal Reserve will raise U.S. interest rates this year.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS added 0.3 percent in slow trade while the MSCI Asia Pacific Index was down 0.9 percent, fell for a fourth day.

Japan's Nikkei share average slipped on Tuesday, pressured by a stronger yen and slumping oil prices, and trading was thin as investors awaited a Federal Reserve gathering later this week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The Nikkei stock index was down 0.6 percent at 16,497.36.

China stocks rose slightly on Tuesday, as transportation and raw material shares were firm on the back of Beijing's plan to revive its struggling northeast rustbelt, offsetting falls in real estate stocks.

The blue-chip CSI300 index rose 0.2 percent, to 3,341.83. The Shanghai Composite Index also gained 0.2 percent, to 3,089.71 points.

Hong Kong shares were roughly flat on Tuesday as investors awaited clues on U.S. monetary policies from the coming annual conference of the Federal Reserve.

The Hang Seng index was unchanged at 22,998.93, while the China Enterprises Index lost 0.2 percent, to 9,586.99 points.
