Japan's Nikkei share average fell on Thursday as the market took a breather after the yen strengthened, while most investors stayed cautious awaiting decisions from the two-day Bank Of Japan policy meeting ending Friday.

The Nikkei dropped 1.1 percent to 16,476.84.

China stocks closed up on Thursday as rises in auto stocks and industrials offset declines in financials resulting from news of a pending crackdown on stock investments by China's massive wealth management industry.

The CSI300 index of the largest listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen rose 0.1 percent, to 3,221.14, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.1 pct to 2,994.32 points.

Hong Kong stocks eased slightly on Thursday, dragged by energy and financial shares.

The Hang Seng index fell 0.2 percent to 22,174.34 points, while the China Enterprises Index lost 0.4 percent to 9,082.85.
