• The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI ended down 0.16 percent at 24,140.91 while the S&P 500 .SPX lost 0.01 percent to 2,629.27.
The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC added 0.21 percent to 6,776.38.
The S&P 500 fell a tiny bit on Wednesday, with Microsoft and other technology stocks making modest gains but not quite offsetting losses in energy shares after oil prices dropped more than 2 percent.
• Asian markets edged up early on Thursday after recording steep losses in the Wednesday session, which saw the Hang Seng Index and Nikkei 225 falling around 2 percent. Stateside, major indexes closed narrowly mixed as investors awaited tax reform developments.
• Japan's Nikkei 225 bounced 0.92 percent after falling nearly 2 percent in the previous session. Gains were seen across sectors, with automakers, tech and financial names all climbing higher. Energy-related plays were mixed after oil prices slid on Wednesday.
• Across the Korean Strait, the benchmark Kospi index was little changed, trading 0.03 percent below the flat line. Gains in tech heavyweights were offset by losses in the manufacturing and oil sectors. Blue-chip Samsung Electronics rose 1 percent while steelmakers Posco and Hyundai Steel slid 0.15 percent and 0.82 percent, respectively.
